How to Coach and Teach Coach Jack Hartman’s half-court T-Game Basketball Part 8 - Continued
Teaching the T-Game When the T-game is first presented within the five-against-five whole game approach, all attention is focused on the three post players. This is after a thorough explanation and using the part method drills that follow. Part Method The part-method approach is best facilitated through individual work with the front court men prior to practice. When our front court three-on-three drills are used during regular practice sessions, the back court players are usually working on the skills required of them, such as ball handling, dribbling, and working against the press.
| T-20 #4 is instructed to make a two-handed overhead pass to #5. #5 is taught to score, or draw a foul upon receiving the pass from #4. At the same time he is taught how to position himself against defender #5.#3 is taught to react to the basket on the #4 to #5 pass, as well as the value of working the offensive rebounding position. Should #5, with the ball, be bothered by defender 3, he should pass to #3, who would break toward the basket. The triple post is practiced by rotating each man to the corner passer, high and low post positions. The continuity is expected, thus, the drills are practiced on the left as well as right side of the court. The next drill is used primarily to perfect the over-top pass. | | T-21 The defense is instructed to front the low-post man. The T-games basic scoring options start with the coach’s pass to #4. If you recall, earlier, I emphasized the importance of #4 reading the defense correctly before passing. This drill is keyed on #4’s execution, based on his observation of the manager. If the manager follows #3 to the high post (and we instruct him to do so most of the time), we want #4 to throw the over-the-top pass to #5, or pass to #3 if the manager doesn’t come with #3. #3 would then dump off to #5 underneath. Once again, all positions, except manager and coach, are rotated and both to the left as well as the right side of the court is used.
