How to plan a late season basketball practice schedule (part 4)

Monday, December 4

3:00 to 3:30Fundamental Stations spaced around the gym
Give special attention to the one-on-one station. Damon and Brad need extra offensive work.
3:30 to 3:40Shooting practice
Special work on shooting form of John, Richard, Dick, and Sam. All shots are too flat, Get them to use more arch.
3:40 to 3:50Use game warm-up drill
Explain use and reason for the jump-stop.
3:50 to 4:00Explain to squad the importance of defensive board play of opposing center and our plan to take him outside.
Instruct the third team on coming opponent's offense.
4:00 to 4:15Opponent's Offense versus our defenses
Work on delayed offense under these conditions: various leads with 5-3-2-1 minute to go; screen - everyone on the move; look inside to the center; look for opportunities to penetrate and kick it back outside, but continue looking for the layup; alternate first and second teams. 
4:15 to 4:45Scrimmage; Sideline-fast break from free-throw set-up, through transition and offense. Repeat at other end.

Tuesday, December 5

3:00 to 3:30Fundamental Stations spaced around the gym

Give special attention to three-on-three. Stress good passing and timing of the two cutters. (Scissors Play)
3:30 to 3:40Shooting practice
Special work on shooting form of John and Sam. All shots are too flat, Get them to use more arch.
3:40 to 3:55Offense versus opponent's defenses. Stress correct tempo of movement.
Damon should shoot more. Get the ball into pivot, use shot-fakes more, and get in better follow-up position.
3:55 to 4:00Cincinnati fast-break drill Stress importance of every possession and outside men stay wide within one foot of sidelines..
4:00 to 4:40Scrimmage: On defense have Mike to tie up opposing center to slow down fast break. Give Chad and Bart more time at forward positions. Use first five against third five and second five against fourth five. (When not shooting free throws, players waiting their turn should watch and study the scrimmage.) Check on delayed offense the last five minutes
4:40 to 4:45Free throw contest.

Wednesday, December 6

3:00 to 3:30Fundamental Stations spaced around the gym
Give special attention to the one-on-one station. Stress good defense.
Give special attention to three-on-three. Stress good passing and timing of the two cutters. (Scissors Play)
3:30 to 4:00Shooting practice
Special work on shooting form of Mike and Sam. Drill them in the shot-fake and duck-under move and turn-around jump shots. Shot fake, go somewhere, and shoot the last five minutes.
4:00 to 4:15Five versus five. Have Chad alternate with Mike at center position. On the last five minutes, concentrate on fast break defense.
4:15 to 4:20Cincinnati fast-break drill Stress importance of every possession and outside men stay wide within one foot of sidelines..
4:20 to 4:45Scrimmage: On defense have Mike to tie up opposing center to slow down fast break. Give Chad and Bart more time at forward positions. Use first five against third five and second five against fourth five. (When not shooting free throws, players waiting their turn should watch and study the scrimmage.) Check on delayed offense the last five minutes
4:45 to 4:50Free throw - Let them designate player to shoot two free-throws. If he misses one, entire team must run suicides.

Thursday, December 7

3:00 to 3:30Fundamental Stations spaced around the gym
Give special attention to the one-on-one station. Give special attention to three-on-three. Stress good passing and timing of the two cutters. (Scissors Play)
3:30 to 3:35Short-shot drill.
3:35 to 3:45Offense versus opponent's defenses. Stress correct tempo of movement.
3:45 to 3:55Have fourth five represent the opponent's defense, picking up all over the court.
3:55 to 4:00Delayed offense under game conditions, using clock at two minutes and one minute. Make it short and snappy.
4:00 to 4:50Scrimmage: Third, fourth fives, and seconds under-worked. Free throws for varsity.

Friday, December 8

Game Day

The practice schedule for the week starting Monday, February 19 is made in the view of two hard games on February 17 and 18, with two more coming up February 23 and 24. Players are not required to practice Monday, but to rest mentally and physically from basketball.

Tuesday, February 20

3:00 to 3:30Fundamental Stations spaced around the gym
Give special attention to the pick and roll station. Damon and Mike need extra offensive work.
Give special attention to three-on-three. Stress good passing and timing of the two cutter. (Guard-around play,)
3:30 to 3:55Shooting practice
Competitive shooting game "21" and competitive free throw shooting five players to a basket.
3:55 to 4:05Special work on pivot play and three-point shooting from kick outs from pivot serving as a warm-up drill.
4:05 to 4:30Cincinnati fast-break drill Stress importance of every possession and outside men stay wide within one foot of sidelines..
4:30 to 4:55Scrimmage the reserves: Excuse varsity and some reserves.

Wednesday, February 21

3:00 to 3:30Fundamental Stations spaced around the gym
Give special attention to the one-on-one station. Give special attention to three-on-three. Stress good passing and timing of the two cutters. (Scissors Play)
3:30 to 3:45Shooting practice: Play "21"l.
3:45 to 3:55Three versus three. Stress timing and cutting.
3:45 to 3:55Cincinnati fast-break drill Outside men stay wide (we have been staying too close together thus losing many scoring opportunitities.
3:55 to 4:10Scrimmage for varsity.
4:10 to 4:25Scrimmage: for reserves.
4:25 to 4:45Free throws for everybody.

Thursday, February 22

No Practice: Rest physically and mentally. If weather permits spend some time outside.
