How to coach, teach and use the basketball 2-1-2 strong-side combination defense part 3

Diagram SS6 shows offensive player 3 with the ball and being guarded by zone player 4. At the same time, offensive player 4 cuts off 2's screen and flashes to the low post on the ball side. Offensive 2 opens to the ball and cuts to the outside hoping to receive a pass from 3. Offensive 1, too, pops outside the 3-point arc looking for a skip pass and shot.

Since offensive 2 is on ball-side, just outside the arc, defender 2 plays in the passing lane. Defensive player 1 does likewise except, he follows the rules and places himself on the imaginary line, between his assigned opponent and the ball. All 3 zone players must adjust the positions corresponding to movement of the ball. They keep their arms active ready to intercept, or deflect, a pass, and prevent inside penetration.

Diagram SS7 shows offensive player 3 reversing the ball to 2 on the outside, then cutting shallow to the opposite wing. Defender 2 immediately pressures his assignment as defender 1 moves up to put himself in the passing lane to offensive 1.

As always the case, the 3 zone players adjust their position with movement of the ball. They must keep their arms active, but alert to any interior penetration.

Diagram SS8 shows the ball being relayed to offensive 3 on the wing, 4 cutting to the high post, 2 replacing 4 at the opposite wing, and 5 cutting to the low post on the ball side.

Defender 1 pressures his man who has the ball, while defender 2 keeps himself positioned on the imaginary line between his assigned player 2 and the ball. If 2 moves, he moves. At the same time, he helps defend the interior against passes, depending his position at the time.

As always, the 3 zone players, 3, 4, and 5, adjust their positions with movement of the ball.
